Maths

Maths has many far-reaching skills that enable us to be successful throughout life. At Hucklow, we want all pupils over time to acquire a deep, secure, adaptable and long-term understanding of the subject, which they can then use when moving on to more rich and sophisticated problem-solving opportunities. We want our maths teaching to enable pupils to have a secure grasp of all areas of the maths curriculum: understanding the number system and place value; using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operations across a range of contexts; exploring 2d and 3d shapes and recognising their properties; handling data in a variety of ways and usefully, for example, for science or design technology investigations. Pupils at Hucklow will broaden and deepen their understanding when applying their skills and knowledge in a range of problem solving and reasoning contexts, linked to what they have learned. We also want our pupils to communicate their mathematical understanding in both spoken and written forms, using the correct mathematical vocabulary for their age, with confidence, fluency and clear understanding.

At Hucklow, high quality and engaging maths lessons follow a clear and progressive sequence to enable all pupils to know more, remember more and apply their skills. We use the White Rose Maths scheme of learning to help meet the needs of our learners. Through this, pupils regularly revisit prior learning throughout each topic and build on this to create links to new learning. This allows pupils to learn all of the knowledge and skills as outlined in the National Curriculum, first using equipment to help pupils uncover the new or key concepts before moving onto pictorial representations and written calculation methods when ready.

Parents and carers can access White Rose Maths themselves from home, where there is a useful Parents and Pupils Section to look at relevant resources and videos to support understanding at home, as well as a free app to download onto phones or other devices to use with their child. Access can be gained at www.whiterosemaths.com for full information on topics covered from F2 to Y6, as well as free downloadable home workbooks for each topic.

Assessment in Maths

Teachers assess pupils’ mathematical knowledge and skills in many different ways. This begins with a pre-assessment before the teaching of a topic, to check what pupils remember from any previous teaching of these skills or concepts. This enables teachers to make sure the planned future teaching and learning opportunities are well-matched to pupils’ current abilities and conceptions. There are daily recall and assessment opportunities built into lessons to ensure learning continues to match or adapt to pupils’ needs well. At the end of each topic taught, end-of-block assessments are completed to check learning is secure and any gaps can be addressed quickly. At the end of each full term, Y1 to Y6 pupils are assessed using the White Rose Assessment tests: one for arithmetic skills and one for reasoning and problem-solving skills linked to what they have been learning. Assessment grids are used for each pupil to accurately identify a step within which the pupil is working and identify any gaps that need to be addressed.

At the end of each key stage in Year 2 and Year 6, there are Statutory Assessment Tests (SATS). At the end of Year 4, pupils compete a Multiplication Test online.

In EYFS, pupils are assessed using observations, benchline assessments and mini tasks following the Foundation Stage Curriculum.
