PSHE and RSE

We believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) is an essential part of helping our children to foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values. We believe that PSHE education is a chance to give every child an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. This includes helping them to deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change. It gives them a solid foundation for whatever challenging opportunities lie ahead, so they can face a world full of uncertainty with hope.

We recognise that being online is an integral part of children’s lives. Social media, online games, websites and apps can be accessed through mobile phones, computers, laptops and tablets – all of which form a part of children’s online world. In order to educate and safeguard children against the risks, they participate in Online Safety lessons taken from our PSHE curriculum, with guidance from the PSHE Association and lessons taken directly from Purple Mash and our computing curriculum. During these lessons, children are encouraged to ask any questions and participate in conversations about the benefits and dangers of the online world, and how to keep themselves safe.

At the Hucklow, we have carefully planned our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils to ensure that they have a secure and age appropriate understanding of different elements of the RSE curriculum by the time they leave Primary School. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have learnt about the following key areas: family and friendships, how humans and other animals grow and develop, caring for each other, keeping themselves safe, healthy relationships with others, changes as they grow up and positive mental health and well-being. Our RSE curriculum aims to ensure that pupils are well informed and prepared to live safe and healthy lifestyles and are able to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. We have worked closely with parents and families, throughout a detail consultation process, to develop the RSE curriculum and have planned for the coverage of mandatory content as set out in the statutory guidance developed by the DfE.  We continue to be mindful and respectful of families views and each year endeavour to support all our families to feel comfortable and confident with the content of the curriculum.
